Empowering Lives, Achieving Success

Programs

  • Independent Study is an optional educational alternative program. The primary goal of Independent Study is to provide a flexible educational program of an individualized nature. The student and their parent/guardian are asked to sign an agreement requiring the student to complete a minimum of 4 hours of course work per day and to meet with their instructor at least twice a week. Students are welcome to attend as often as they wish to receive additional instruction, to discuss assignments as needed, and to keep up with course the outline. At other times, when the students are completing assignments and have questions, the teacher is just a phone call away.

Credit will be earned as course work is completed. This allows students to work in their individual classes at their own pace. The work they will be doing is equal to and covers the same content as the district's comprehensive high schools. Multiple modes of instruction are provided for the students including individual instruction, cooperative learning, and updated educational technology including a computer lab.

There are three Independent Study sites located in the El Monte High School District: El Monte High School (444 - 7701), Rosemead High School (285 - 2712), and Fernando R. Ledesma High School (442-0481). For more information about the first two sites, call the numbers listed.

                The Independent Study Program located on the Fernando R. Ledesma campus operates on a modular schedule: MW:7:40 - 9:00, 9:00 - 10:20, 10:20 - 11:40, 12:40-2:40pm

TTh:           time schedule is the same as above

M-Th:          time schedule is the same as above

Friday is a makeup day for any missed appointments. The staff will help and support the student, but self-discipline and hard work will be the key to achieving their educational goals.

  • The Opportunity Program is an alternative educational program for 13 - 15 year old students whose needs were not met at the comprehensive high school. The objectives of the program are:

1.) to assist students in developing and improving basic academic skills required to successfully complete high school graduation requirements.

2.) to provide an insight into the current job market.

3.) to provide a forum for enhancement of motivational skills and self - esteem.

    4.) to improve attendance.

The Opportunity Program's curriculum is based on the district's comprehensive high schools with an independent study structure. Courses are remedial based and developed to allow students to work at an individual pace. The instructional methodology is a tutorial approach. Students also engage in a computer curriculum program in English, Math, and other courses. It is the intent of this program to return most of the students to the regular high school program at the end of each year.

The Opportunity Program is located on Fernando R. Ledesma High School campus. Students attend class Monday - Friday. Credit is earned by productive effort and course work completion.
